Well, this seems like it has the potential for some very interesting stories.  Or be a total train wreck!  Excited!

We’re happy to announce that not only can online dating get you the man or woman of your dreams, it can also get you into the Olympics.  Winter Olympics, but still.

We’re going to go on a slightly unromantic bent today and discuss some of the numbers that will hopefully convince those of you that are skeptical of online dating to give it a go.  HKH first tried online dating back in 1998, when the Internets were just starting to really take off in the U.S.  Was I too unattractive to find girls at bars or parties?  I have evidence that suggests not.  Did I not have friends that could introduce me to potential romantic partners?  Again, no.  Was I really busy and working in a law firm in the middle of night for months on end, with less time to be able to devote to socializing?  Bingo!  And I’ve found that that is often the case with a lot of Hong Kongers.

Let’s face it, if you’ve been in Hong Kong for more than a year or two, you’ve likely exhausted the possibilities of meeting friends of friends to get set up on blind dates with.  Or, you’ve done it and it simply hasn’t worked out.  Well, HKH encourages you to continue looking for dates the old fashioned way, but it also wouldn’t hurt for Hong Kongers to catch up with their counterparts in other big cities and utilize the Internet a bit more effectively.  And hey, lucky you, you have HKH to give you guidance on what and what not to do when you dive into the online dating pool.

But, if you need a little more evidence, take a look at the results from a Pew Research poll that debunks some of the myths about who uses online dating and how well it works.

If you are one of those intrepid souls that occasionally likes to venture as far as a three kilometers from Central, than you should not miss this little gem of a sushi restaurant, located in Sai Ying Pun. Okay, know where Sheung Wan is? Just follow Hollywood road to the western edge of Sheung Wan and you’ll be in Sai Ying Pun. A hot spot, it is not. But there are some nice surprises to be had there, and Honjin is one.

The Girl and have walked by the place numerous times and finally decided to get off our butts and try out this not too trendy looking spot with a menu featuring a wide array of sushi, sashimi and robatayaki dishes.

We were able to get a seat easily, as the place always seems to be about 1/3 to 1/2 full but never totally booked. This is a good thing, as long as it doesn’t put them out of business. The decor is fairly standard mod sushi joint, but not quite as bright or antiseptic looking as many sushi places tend to be.

The menu is…extensive, so we got a large bottle of sake to help us pass the time as we plowed through the food selections. By the way, the sake selection is also extensive and also not cheap. About halfway through the sake, we decided that we should probably eat something, so we started with a simple vegetable/beef soup, followed by a baked oyster appetizer. It was not like the baked scallop casserole dish that I have been unable to find outside of Northridge, California, nor was it large, but it was presented beautifully and had a nice creamy (not slimy) texture. Next up, we dove into some plain old sushi and sashimi standards, including mackerel and the salmon, which was like buttah!

The place is as solid as you will find in Hong Kong, and while not inexpensive, it’s not out of line with what you can expect from similar establishments. And I give it an extra bump simply for providing a semi-upscale dining experience without having to hike into Central or (God forbid) Causeway Bay.

In my attempts to provide you, my valued reader (literally), with tools to make dating in Hong Kong a little easier, I will be running an ongoing series of restaurant and bar reviews so that you can make informed choices about where your next awkward date will take place.  This week: FINDS in Lan Kwai Fong.

Being a half Swede (yeah, not loving the heat here) I am always happy to hear about places where I can indulge in classic Scandinavian fare like pickled herring, even though I hate pickled herring.  FINDS in Lan Kwai Fong is one such place.   And it also has a super clever name since “FINDS” comes from combining the first letter of the names of the main five Scandinavian countries.  Do I really have to do this for you?  Sigh.  Okay, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden.  Now go buy an atlas.

FINDS is located in the Hotel LKF which is “a hip boutique hotel in Lan Kwai Fong .”  Okay, people and businesses of Hong Kong, referring to yourself, places you hang out or things you do as “hip” or “trendy” makes people that actually are those things giggle at you behind your back.  Please stop, you wouldn’t last a day in New York.

Now, as to the restaurant itself, I can assure you that this review will be biased, with a bit of negative commentary, but ultimately perhaps an overly positive conclusion given that FINDS tries too hard, just like every place else in LKF.  But it’s my blog, so shut it.  That said, why don’t I let the good people of FINDS themselves tell you a bit about the experience?  My commentary in bold.

“Live a FINDS life! Indulge on our delectable Scapas — Scandinavian Tapas (we paid someone $10,000 to come up with “Scapas”) till closing; Lunch or dine from a delicious choice of Modern Scandinavian cuisine (enjoy smaller portions of classic food!); or simply sip on our gorgeous drinks while lounging in our cool atmosphere till late! (we are trying hard to make you feel cool, yet failing to realize that saying that has the opposite effect) Located on the famous Wyndham Street in Central, FINDS has an enchanting forest like lobby entrance (we found some plants on sale at Japan Home Center), an icy-cool decor , a warm atmosphere (we’re indecisive), an exclusive 5 star dining VIP Scapas Private Lounge (douchebag lair) and a relaxing outdoor terrace all in one venue (we know you’ll be more likely to come if we let you smoke somewhere)!

Now, as this was not a real dinner date, we did not get too deep into the menu.  That’s one thing that makes FINDS a…find (thanks.  Here all week.)  You can grab a table, inside or out, and have a couple drinks and appetizers and have a fairly relaxed first meeting. I highly recommend the Chef’s Tasting Platter, which  includes a a salmon/dill mix on dainty little toasts which were, quite simply, awesome.  I also had the Scandinavian Crab and Shrimp Cocktail, also excellent, though I have always found shrimp cocktails and the like rather overrated.  And of course, being good Norsepeople, they make very solid cocktails, including a very nice Manhattan, the benchmark by which I measure all establishments against each other.  Take a look at the menu and you can see why this should be a destination for anyone wanting a cool and refreshing meal to take the edge off the Hong Kong heat.

And if you’re not convinced yet, they have reindeer on the menu.  Sorry Rudolph, but you are just too tasty to pass up.

Grade: B+

Good for: first date cocktails, second date attempts to impress with your diverse taste in cuisine.

Let’s say you’ve come to the point in a budding romance where you feel comfortable taking your first vacation together. Go for it, but remember that this can be the ultimate test of strength for your relationship.  You should therefore have an understanding of how men and women approach a holiday differently. To wit:

Girl vacation:

Girl 1: “So I found some great stuff!  There’s a little village 15 miles away that is just filled with shops run by (insert oppressed indigenous people) selling their arts and crafts.  And after that we can go to a few museums on the way back.  One of them is the actual place where Jane Austen spent 8 days having fainting spells and writing pages 23 through 41 of  ‘Pride and Prejudice.’  Aaand, there’s a great outlet mall that we can go to tomorrow.  We can get facials, mani/pedis and they even have a steam room!”

Girls 2-4: (Squealing)

Guy Vacation:

Guy 1: “Any plan for today?”

Guy 2: “I’m thinking pool and margaritas to start.”

Guys 1, 3 and 4: “Done.”

Repeat for x number of days.

Guy/Girl Vacation:

Girl: Reduce shopping by 50%

Guy: Reduce drinking by 65%

The rest is a crap shoot.

If the sex:fights ratio stays at 1:1 or better, the relationship will be secured for another year or until the next major vacation.*

If the ratio falls significantly below 1:1 (the bad way) one or the other party will end the relationship upon returning home, allotting one week between return and termination for every six months that the relationship has been in existence.

*Front loading the vacation with sex is not valid for ratio calculation purposes (e.g., 4:1 on day one, followed by 1:3, 0:1, 0:1 will result in termination of the relationship).
